Horse festivals take place throughout Tibet each summer. Some of the more famous ones such as the Jyekundo, Litang and Nagchu horse festivals attract tens of thousands of spectators, while smaller ones may only have a few hundred. This picture was taken at a small horse festival on the grasslands near Labrang in eastern Amdo province. Hundreds on nomad Tibetans arrived to the event on horseback. The dew on the grasslands was frozen even though it was July. Amdo Tibetans are known for their horse riding skills, even though more and more nomads are trading in their horse for a motorcycle. Horse festivals are one of the most fascinating aspects of Tibetan culture.
