The housing styles across Tibet vary tremendously. In the nomadic areas there are usually no trees due to the high elevation (usually above 4000m / 13,120ft) so the people live in yak hair or canvas tents. In farming communities people often live in mud brick homes. In some regions of Kham (southeast Tibet) there are many forests so many homes are made of wood. In the southern Tibet region near the Himalaya mountains houses are made of stone. In cities such as Lhasa and Shigatse many people live in modern apartment complexes. Here are some pictures of some of the varying types of houses seen across Tibet.

Tibet as an area wherein there is elevated and sloped lands have various kinds of houses. People lived in tents, stone houses or apartments depending on the location of their houses. This is just a sign of adaptation to the environment and also as a form of protection from strong winds and heavy rains.

Love the site! Very informative! I don't know if you received my email, but I'm interested in a few of your photos for a book I'm illustrating.
