Though Sera Monastery in Lhasa is probably the most famous place to watch debates, debates take place at most monasteries throughout the 4 main sects of Tibetan Buddhism. A little over a month ago, I was able to spend the day at Damkhar Monastery (འདམ་དཀར་དགོན་) near Jyekundo. While there, I was able to watch a group of about 100 monks debate for about an hour. I have witnessed countless debates in the past throughout all regions of Tibet. Though Sera Monastery is well known for its debates, I prefer watching monk debates where there are no other foreigners and in places that are off of the tourist path. I had a great time watching the debates and afterward, was invited to lunch with the monks.
The following pictures were all taken at Damkhar Monastery in January 2010.
